Fauja Singh Registers to Become World’s First 100 Year Old Marathon Runner

Fauhja Singh turned 100 years old in April 2011, and has since taken the world record for a 10k run (6 miles ) over 80 years old, completing it in 83 minutes.

Singh isn’t stopping there though.  He registered last week to run the 2012 Edinburgh marathon which is to take place in May.

Author Khushwant Singh who wrote a just-published biography about Fauja called Turbaned Tornado, confirms this to Extreme Longevity.  ”Fauja has actually enrolled himself for the 2012 Edinburgh marathon,” he said.  ”This will be his last race.”

Singh started running at age 89 and has already completed 7 marathons.  He ran his last one at age 97.

The all-time oldest marathon runner to ever complete the race was Dimitrion Yordanidis who was 98 years old when he ran the Athens marathon in 1976.

In 2008, Buster Martin claimed to be the world’s first 100 year old marathoner when he completed the London marathon.  He was later found to be fraudulent, he was actually only 93 at the time, and his name does not appear on the official list of finishers.

Being the first 100 year old person to run and complete a full marathon (26.2 miles) is a very important milestone of human acheivment.

Rigorous exercise is a crucial practice to maximal extend human lifespan, and seeing the first person to illustrate this theory in practice should be a great motivation to us all.

Godspeed Mr Singh, we’ll be rooting for you.  And actually, in May 2012 he will be 101.
