115-year-old Chiyono Hasegawa, Oldest Person in Japan Has Died

Chiyono Hasegawa was born on Nov. 20, 1896 and had just turned 115 last month. She was only one of two living people in the world who were 115 years old.

Unfortunately Ms. Hasegawa died last night in a facility in southern Japan.

Now there is only one person in the world over age 115, Besse Cooper of Geoegia who turned 115 in August.

Currently it is extremely rare for people to live more than 110 years. There are only 81 known so-called supercentanarians.

It is hoped through the advent of scientific developments to unravel and slow the aging process, achieving this age will become commonplace. Some experts believe the first person to live to 150 has already been born.

The oldest known age of death is 122 years for Jeanne Calment of France who dies in 1999.
